Whiting Tennis was born in Hampton, Virginia, the second son of an Episcopalian Minister, raised in Buffalo, NY, and attended high school and college in the Northwest (BFA in painting, University of Washington). In 1990, in lieu of graduate school, he moved to New York City to see and make art and pursue gallery representation. (He returned to Seattle in 2004). He has received the Pollock Krasner, Neddy, Arlene Schnitzer and the Joan Mitchell awards for painting and sculpture and has works in private and institutional collections across the country. His resume includes solo museum shows at The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum, The Halley Ford Museum of Art, and The Museum of Northwest Art. He is represented by Derek Eller Gallery, NYC, and Greg Kucera Gallery, and is currently working on a February show for Russo Lee in Portland OR.
