August 26 - September 8, 2023
Public Reception: Saturday, August 26th, 6:30-8:30pm
READYMADE is pleased to present Dog Day Afternoons, an exhibition of works by Suzanne Scott, Polly Shindler, and Kelly Worman. As the summer days grind on, and sunburns fade to deep UV resistant hues, Dog Day Afternoons presents a group of artists who celebrate the prosaic and the sweetness of slower living. The painters depict through varying levels of representation and abstraction scenes that evoke the thick stillness of August air, the noble toil of tending the garden, and the verdant greenery of late summer overgrowth.
Suzanne Scott works through series inspired by personal history, relationships, and the patterns of nature. Her abstractions incorporate the color palate of rich emeralds, sapphire, rubies, lapis and garnet, reflecting her professional training as a gemologist. A student of Chuck Close, she takes a methodical, scientific approach to paintings that are at once loosely representational and diagrammatic.
Polly Shindler's scenes of domestic life exude a casual grace and ease. The immediacy of the images of architecture, interiors, pets and rooftop gardens belies their specificity and close observation of every detail, where nothing is too small to lose significance. Reminiscent of the colors, decoration and sentimentality of Pierre Bonnard, she displays a tender view into everyday life.
Kelly Worman uses vibrant colors, and an energetic mark to arrive at mixed media abstractions that explore relationships on a personal, collective and cultural scale. Evading a direct interpretation, the forms are at once familiar and foreign. Descriptive of female bodies, plush patterned textiles, house plants and fruit bowls, meaning lies in the interaction of these forms, and the dialogues that arise from their vigorous composition.
The exhibition is the sixth in READYMADE Gallery's summer group show series. Every year artists ere invited to participate in a one or two-week residency in Provincetown, Massachusetts. While on the Cape, artists create new work inspired by their surroundings or continued from their existing studio practice. The residency provides housing in Orleans and Eastham, and 2,000 sq feet of studio space in Provincetown.
The artists will be in residence:
Polly Schindler and Kelly Worman: August 20 - 27
Suzanne Scott: August 27 - September 3
